The Government of the United States through its Embassy in Monrovia has provided a consignment of relief items including several bundles of zinc and roofing nails to more than 1,600 persons directly affected by a violent storm which hit the city of Ganta and nearby towns and villages in Nimba County on March 21, 2007.
The United States Ambassador to Liberia, Donald E .Booth, noting that assistance was needed to help the Government of Liberia adequately respond to the damage caused by the storm issued a “Disaster Declaration” on April 3, 2007 following a damage assessment carried out by USAID/Office of Disaster Assistance (OFDA). An amount of 50,000 USD was later made available from the Disaster Relief Fund to provide zinc roofing materials and nails to the victims of the storm.
The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) served as implementing partner responsible for procurement and distribution of the emergency supplies to the Nimba County storm victims.
USAID/OFDA Program Officer during a recent assessment trip to Ganta confirmed that the LNRC had begun the distribution of the relief materials to more than 180 family heads, and that some of the beneficiaries have already completed rehabilitation of their homes. More than 200 houses affected by the storm will be rehabilitated.
