Public Diplomacy Section

Introduction

Public Affairs Officer
Meg E. Riggs

The Public Diplomacy Section of the United States Embassy in Monrovia operates primarily to promote understanding and acceptance of U.S. Government policies, goals and programs. The PD Section aims to provide information to Liberians from all segments of society who influence public policy and shape public opinions. The primary objective is to promote the national interests of the United States -- democracy, regional security, human rights, education, health, environmentally sustainable development, equal opportunities and free market economies.

The PD Section and the American Library utilizes a wide variety of resources to accomplish its goals -- official reports, statements, periodicals, books, EBSCO Host, the Internet, U.S. speakers, exchange programs, videos, and digital video conferences. The American Library hosts a variety of public diplomacy programs such as workshops, cultural series, movie nights, and speaker programs that aim to broaden the horizons for all audience members.
The PD Section offers many services for those wishing to study in the United States. The Frances Perkins Academic Advising Center at the American Library has information on U.S. Universities, how to prepare for standardized exams (TOFEL, SAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc), and advisors are there to help a prospective student find the program best suited for them. The PD Section also administers the process for Liberia’s Humphrey and Fulbright programs, as well as the International Visitor and Leadership Program (IVLP) that provides opportunities for Liberian professionals to network with their American colleagues.
