U.S. Provides $2 Million to Rehabilitate Liberia’s Public Works Ministry
(MONROVIA, June 25, 2007)-The United States Government is providing a two-million dollar grant to the Government of Liberian for the renovation of the Ministry of Public Works building in Monrovia. This grant to the Ministry of Public reflects the sustained commitment of the United States to support Liberia’s ongoing efforts to reconstruct and rehabilitate vital national infrastructure, including roads, schools, government institutions, and training institutes.
Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Pubic Works complex was identified by the Liberian Government and the United States Embassy as an urgent reconstruction priority that will enable the Government of Liberia to better carry out its responsibility of reconstruction and maintenance of national infrastructure.
A Liberian construction company, “Ecocon Inc,” was awarded the contract for this major renovation activity through a competitive tendering process. Architecture and engineering services for the project have been provided by another Liberian company, Milton & Richards Inc
USAID-funded Liberia Community Infrastructure Program (LCIP) will administer the grant which will be used to restore the key components of the Ministry to full functionality. LCIP, managed by DAI, a U.S. - based management consulting company working under contract to USAID, has been operating in Liberia since 2004. Other major infrastructure reconstruction projects currently supported by LCIP include renovation of the Capitol Building, rehabilitation of the Buchanan-Centos-Greenville road, repair of the Ganta Sanniquellie road, and rehabilitation of the rural teacher training institutes in Kakata and Zorzor.
