American Embassy Monrovia is open for American citizen services (passports, notarials, federal benefits, etc.) Monday - Thursday 2:00pm - 5:00pm and on Fridays from 8:00am - 12:00pm.
Passport Information
Applying For or Renewing Your U.S. Passport
You can apply for or renew your passport or passport card at American Embassy Monrovia*. It will take approximately two weeks to receive your passport after you apply at the Embassy.
Applications are accepted Monday - Thursday from 2:00pm - 5:00pm and Friday from 8:00am - 12:00pm. Please see the schedule of fees for applicable charges.
To apply for/renew your passport:
#1 - Come by the Embassy Monday - Thursday from 2:00pm - 5:00pm or Friday from 8:00am - 12:00pm. Please note: the Embassy is closed on all U.S. and local holidays.
#2 - Please bring your most recent passport (for renewals) or citizenship documentation (for first-time applicants) with you. Citizenship documentation is your original naturalization or U.S. birth certificate. If you are having your name changed on your passport, bring your original marriage certificate or legal court documents with you.
#3 - Please bring the appropriate Passport Fees with you.
#4 - Please bring two passport size photographs with you. They must be 2"x 2" in size; your face must the most prominent thing in the picture. The background must be white, and your ears and hairline must be showing. No dark glasses or hats.
#5 - Please bring either a DS-11 or DS-82 with you. See below for information on whether you should bring a DS-11 or DS-82.
#6 - If applying for a passport for a minor child (under age 16), both parents must be present to sign the application. Also, age progression photographs of the child might be requested if the child's appearance has changed significantly over the last 5 years (especially if the child was a baby in the last passport photographs). If one parent cannot be present at the Embassy, a notarized DS-3053 must be submitted in lieu of a personal appearance.
SUBMIT FORM DS-82 IF ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ARE TRUE -
Your Most Recent U.S. Passport:
-Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application
-Was issued when you were age 16 or older
-Was issued within the last 15 years
-Was issued in your current name or you can legally document your name change
If the above do not apply to you, or if you are applying for your first passport, please fill out a DS-11.
*Please note: if you are behind on your child support payments, you may not be able to be issued a passport.
Additional Pages
You can also have additional pages inserted in your current, valid passport free of charge, though some restrictions** apply. Applications are accepted Monday - Thursday from 2:00pm - 5:00pm and Friday from 8:00am - 12:00pm.
**Your passport must have a photo-digitized image and other enhanced security features; you may also only have pages inserted twice into any given passport. If you have an older passport without a photo-digitized image or have already had two sets of pages added to you book, you will need to apply to renew your passport. See renewal instructions above.
Additional pages are typically processed with 24 hours.
Lost, Damaged or Stolen Passports
If your passport has been lost, damaged or stolen, please report it to the American Embassy and Liberian National Police as soon as possible. You will need to complete a DS-64, statement regarding a lost or stolen passport, and follow the instructions above for renewing your passport. Please note that you will need to submit a DS-11with your application for a new U.S. passport.
Emergency Passports
Since full validity passports only take about 2 weeks to process through American Embassy Monrovia, emergency passports are only issued on rare occasions for exceptional circumstances. These passports will be limited for either direct return travel to the United States or one year. You will need to follow the instructions above regarding lost, damaged or stolen passports for the Embassy to process an emergency passport.
