Application Requirements
In order to qualify for an immigrant visa, there are many requirements that must be met. Some of these requirements apply to all types of immigrant visas. Others only apply to specific categories of immigrant visas.
Below you will find a list of the general application requirements applicable for most categories of immigrant visas. In addition to these standard requirements, there are additional, specific requirements for Family-Based Immigrants, Employment-Based Immigrants, and Diversity Visa participants.
General Requirements for Immigrant Visas
Most immigrant visas require the following documentation:
-
An approved immigrant visa petition. This is generally the I-130, I-129F, I-140 or I-730 form and is typically filed in the United States by your sponsor and forward directly to the Embassy by the National Visa Center.
-
A valid passport good for at least six months after visa issuance.
-
Two passport sized photos with a white background.
-
An original birth certificate.
-
A valid medical exam.
-
Valid police clearances for those 16 years of age or older. Clearances are required from the current country of residence and each additional country an individual has lived in for at least one year.
-
Proof of financial sponsorship. This proof typically includes the I-864 or I-134, along with supporting documentation, such as tax returns and W2 income statements.
-
Proof of qualifying relationship. This is the relationship your petition is based upon. It could be a family relationship (biological or legal) or employment relationship.
-
Evidence of fee payment. Many immigrant visa fees are paid in the United States by the petitioner. If these were not paid, however, the applicant will be expected to pay the current fees at the Embassy on the date of their interview.
