Professional Exchange
The Public Diplomacy Section administers three programs for mid-level professionals and academics – the Fulbright Program, Humphrey Fellowship, and International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).
Fulbright Program
The Fulbright Program was created in 1946 by Senator J. William Fulbright to promote mutual understanding between the United States and the rest of the world. The Fulbright Program in Liberia currently includes the Fulbright Specialist Program (FSP) and the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) program. The FSP brings American academics to Liberia for short-term, collaborative projects, whereas the SIR program provides opportunities for visiting scholars and professionals from Liberia to lecture at U.S. colleges and universities.
Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program
The Humphrey Program brings accomplished professionals from developing countries to the U.S. at a mid-point in their careers for a year of non-degree graduate-level study and related practical experience.
International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)
Each year, the U.S. Embassy selects 10-12 emerging Liberian leaders in government, politics, media, education, business, the environment and other fields to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). IVLP participants visit the United States for three weeks to meet professional counterparts and experience American society and culture firsthand.
